If it's raining - he can't even take the lift half way because the lift doesn't operate in the rain. He has to walk the whole way.

And even if it does, hes stupid because he could use a pen, bring a cane, or just jump and press it. elevator buttons are not that high. this one needs to be more clarified.

the man is too short, so he is able to switch on the middle button.if it is rainy day with help of umbrella he can get the higher one.

No one remembers being a little kid and being unable to push the buttons because they are out of reach? I do.
This old riddle is worded slightly incorrectly. It needs to be as follows, so that you get the clue about having other people push the buttons:
A man lives in the penthouse of an apartment building. Every morning he takes the elevator down to the lobby and leaves the building. Upon his return, however, he can only travel halfway up in the lift and has to walk the rest of the way - unless it's raining OR IF THERE IS ANOTHER PASSENGER IN THE ELEVATOR. What is the explanation for this?

Rob
I knew this one, its on wikipedia when i was looking at lateral thinking. The guy is really short and he cant reach the higher buttons for high floors on the way back up. on the way down the buttons for lower floors are at the bottom. When it rains he uses his umberella.

Also yeh i agree with ecs 101 above. it doesnt say anything about other people going up.
#6 - Rob - 11/01/2007 - 15:21
i thought that the lift would end at a certain floor and he had to walk outside to reach his penthouse

pimpsqueaks
i already knew this one.
#8 - abs - 11/13/2007 - 20:35
yeah well, theres more than one answer here!
lets see. hes short and needs the aid of the umbrella. Or the elevator is powered by the rain (lol).

The elevator can go down, but requires rainwater to fill up the ballast to go up higher.

If s/he lives in a penthouse, then that person is rich, s/he may ask for a better elevator
#10 - Juan Lopez - 12/29/2007 - 06:16
The real answer.
He was a hobbit.
#11 - snotgunge - 01/06/2008 - 02:59
This is the real answer
The man is actually a midget therefore can only press the buttons half way up.

On a rainy day
I think the riddle should have run like this "..... unless on a rainy day". Then it means on a rainy day he might have left home with his umbrella
#14 - Ramram - 02/12/2008 - 10:12
More money..Less Brains
I guess he can carry his umbrella everyday?????He can use it in rain, shine.... and also for the elevator...

#20 - postudent - 04/29/2008 - 18:37
crazy hey?
on rainy days he can use his umbrella to press the numbers but when it is not he doesn't have anything to press the buttons with

arent't i smart?
not...
#21 - laurent choi - 05/16/2008 - 18:37
This is what I think ................
The man can only travel halfway up the elevator is because the man is short. On rainy days he can use his umbrella if he has one, or he can just ask someone tall enough to reach the buttons or he can use anything that would be able to reach the buttons.
#22 - V.L - 06/22/2008 - 00:21
Logical Flaw...
You are speaking of lateral thinking, but this is very much of a conventional thought. 1. Why should someone carry an umbrella on a rainy day? 2. Why should not someone carry an umbrella on a sunny day? 3. Why would someone live in such a place, if it is so difficult to go all the way up on normal days? 4. Why cant a man just wear a rain coat on a rainy day? There are many more logical flaws in this question...
#23 - Rajiv Krishnan Kozhikode - 07/09/2008 - 00:43
answer
there are 46 levels and he has seen the movie 23.
so never wants to go past the level 23 whilst in the elevator. :)

suck that bitches.

i have another logical flaw:
wat if someone else presses a button to go higher than half way because that is their level.
wat happens then?? geees.
#24 - aha - 07/20/2008 - 21:21
the man is a midget. when it is a normal day he can only reach to the tenth floor button, but when he has his umberella on a rainy day ten he canuse his unberella to press the twelth floor button.
#25 - Charlie - 07/21/2008 - 00:44
this worded a little different that i remembered it, but the same never the less. He could take the elevator all the way down everyday but had to get off at the 7th floor unless it was raining, in which then he could use his umbrella to press the button.

The Midget In a trench coat
It was a midget in a trench coatso he had no umbrella. He could only reach the first button that said B (for basement)so he had to wait for a taller person to enter the elevator. However, the only other guy that got into the elevator was even smaller midget. So now one midget got on top of the other midget to reach the top button. That how they both got to the top floor but one of them lived on the floor below and before he could say jack the elevator doors closed and he couldnt reach the button he wanted and then there was power failure. The smaller midget was now stuck and his size didnt make any difference. So he just curled up went to sleep till next morning when janitor found him lying there and he called the cops. The poor midget was hauled off to the cop station and he spent another night on the floor. Thats how the first midget got home.
#27 - Zinan - 08/09/2008 - 14:39
MR
The midget isnt very bright is he? Surely using the umbrella on a rainy day, he would carry a stick or something to press the higher buttons on a non-rainy day!!!! Better still, ask someone else to press it for him (assuming he isnt always in the lift alone).
#28 - ANT - 08/15/2008 - 09:52
er...
why would he want to live in a place that is so troublesome for him ?

If is me, i'm sure I'll move out.
imagin being so tired after work, and still need to walk up the stairs.

if it is a 20 stories building, halfway is 10 floor.
so need to climb 10 flag of stairs after a long tirring day.

worst if there is alot of things to carry.

If he is really that rich, get a mansion high on the hills with nice view. Don't need to worry about the lift or stairs
