I disagree with this answer...6 pairs of each color means that there are 12 black socks and 12 white socks in the drawer. To be garaunteed a pair, you would have to pull out 13 socks.
#1 - Judy - 10/06/2007 - 11:53
i disagree you need to pull out 14 socks to make sure. 13 would give you only 1 black sock if the 1st 12 were white
#2 - ken - 10/07/2007 - 16:50
um
well, it doesn't say which color, so if you pick out 3 then your have to have either 2 or 3 of the same color!
#3 - ppri - 10/08/2007 - 09:47
Dear Ken, Surely amongst 12 white sox you could make a pair!
#4 - andy - 10/11/2007 - 02:58
Duh
ppr1 is right, you pull the first sock its either black or white. You pull the second, its either black or white you might get lucky and get a matching pair. But to gaurentee a matching pair you have to pull three.
#5 - MERLIN - 10/16/2007 - 08:22
Wow people...
Say the first sock you pull out is white. Say the second sock you pull out is black. The next sock you pull out has to be either white or black. It's a guaranteed pair with one of the two socks you already have out. Its 3 socks people...
#6 - Nate - 11/01/2007 - 17:13
Hi Peeps
This clearly makes sense, but umm why do i care??? LOL
#7 - Kay - 11/02/2007 - 11:31
With all the black socks and all the white socks, has everyone forgotten about the Red Sox?
#8 - Robert - 11/03/2007 - 05:59
EASY
I TOTALL AGREE WITH PPRI, MERLIN, AND NATE.
OH!! ALSO WITH KAY
#9 - LUCERO - 11/03/2007 - 17:08
wrong
i agree with judy, the first 12 can all be white or black
who says, the second one is different than the first one ?
you need 14
#10 - sillymartin - 11/08/2007 - 01:17
1st of all, good call Robert. 2nd, 3 is correct. i got it wrong, b/c i forgot that it asked for a matching pair of either sock color. i am an idiot, but, then again, look at my name.
If it's dark you can't see to check.
#12 - Martin - 11/15/2007 - 11:55

woops
lol, i thought the socks were paired together, so i thought, well, all she needs to do is pull out 1 pair. done. it didn't specify if they were separated
#14 - Luke - 11/29/2007 - 18:38
Guyss...common
2 socks to make a pair
2 colors, black and white
1 black, then....
1 white (or another black, then Bingo! your pair) then...
1 black or white....your pair with ATMOST picking three times
#15 - Paul - 11/29/2007 - 21:20
sci
she should pull them all out and pick the best.and retrn the rest
#16 - polycap - 12/07/2007 - 16:03
Simple
24 socks
12 white
12 black
You pull one. Its either white or black.
You pull another. Its also either white or black.
You pull a third. No matter what socks you previously pulled, this sock MUST match.

Possible Results:
3 white.3 black.2 white and 1 black.2 black and 1 white.
Conclusion: Its impossible to have say, 1 black, 1 white, and 1 Unknown, as there are no unknowns,it has been stated that all are either white or black.
#17 - Zac AKA Agito - 12/13/2007 - 09:41

#19 - rix - 12/20/2007 - 08:35

#20 - Kim - 12/20/2007 - 12:37
I'll answer this question with another question
suppose you have 6 white socks, 6 black socks, and half the pairs were dirty.
Suppose you had a stuffy nose and complete darkness, how many socks do you need to get to guarantee a clean pair?

betcha can't solve it.
#21 - cantsolveit - 12/27/2007 - 21:55
EASY Dude
pick 9 socks. you'll get a clean pair guaranteed
#22 - notadumbass - 12/27/2007 - 21:58
Read the problem
It says Cathy has six PAIRS of each color, you only have to pull out 1 PAIR. You just have to read the problem to see the solution.
#23 - Rusty - 12/28/2007 - 19:18

#26 - jk - 02/26/2008 - 23:40
Hey
I thought that if you have pairs of socks, most people would fold them, so shouldn't it take you one draw all things considered
#27 - moi - 03/07/2008 - 17:09
Not True
Actually, this is true. 13 is wrong becuase how could you pull 13 of two collours and not get 2 the same? same with 14.
therefore, 3 is right becuase if you pull out 1 white(w) and 1 black(b) the other would be b or w. you have a pair. if you pull out 22w and 1b, you have a pair. Get it?
#28 - Matthew Greening - 04/01/2008 - 08:50
anybody wid the last problem....the dice...plz help...dyin to understand the thing but cant mak it...help !!!!
#29 - Raj - 04/02/2008 - 03:13
To prove this, lets look at all of the possibilities (B is black, W is white):

WWW
WWB
WBW
WBB
BWW
BWB
BBW
BBB

As you can see, there is a pair in all of the combinations.
It only took me about 5 seconds to solve this!
#30 - Anonymousio! - 04/06/2008 - 00:06
got that one in about 5seconds.
#31 - Todd - 04/13/2008 - 08:34

#32 - joe - 05/08/2008 - 13:40

#33 - ashly - 05/30/2008 - 19:14

If she folded them together, she'd only need to take out two, because they'd already be matched! :D
#39 - Vi - 08/13/2008 - 22:25
she should just turn on a freakin' light. lazy.
#40 - ChicGaara - 08/21/2008 - 11:14
well it was very easy i barely had to think about it. the whole thing is probablity. you have to think probablity. that was what i did and i got right on my first try
#41 - hey there ppl - 08/25/2008 - 17:00
The correct answer is 1
... cuz i'm a amputee.
#42 - quadra - 08/30/2008 - 02:22
Hold on
If you only have two colors in your drawer, you will have a match by your third pull. It will be like 1 2 1, 1 2 2, 1 1 2, 2 2 1. Not really a fourth option.

My question is, if you cant see what color they are, what good does it to pull out a matching pair, unless you put on your socks outside after the sun has come up!
#43 - Scott - 09/01/2008 - 22:57
From Middlefield gr 10
Unless the magical demons eat the other pair of socks and u never find them agian u will be left with nothing and then i will get my magical god farries to buy me more socks therefore i will have infinite sock =D i am so smart
