Just because one is facing north and one is facing south doesn't mean that they are back-to-back. For example, we can use the letters p and d to represent the people. (The line sticking out is the direction they are facing.)
The way you're supposed to interpret this is that they look like this:

p
But in actuality, they can be like this:
p
d
That way, they are looking right at each other, but the p is facing south and the d north. |
