An archaeologist finds two well-preserved bodies under much rock. He knows immediately who these two people are. Who are they and why?

Perhaps a rockslide occurred during an archaeology excursion and crushed two archaeologists under a pile of heavy stones, killing the workers instantly. A third archaeologist who had been working a few hundred yards away heard the commotion and starting running, only to find his two friends under the enormous pile of boulders.

Easy: His neighbors.

There was a massive earthquake the day before and they were listed as missing. In an attempt to save the couple who were lost in the debris, the neighborhood banded together to save the couple by digging them out. This particular helper (the archaeologist) was particular buff and at the forefront of the excavating. Their last words were heard hours earlier, meaning they had just passed away and well preserved. His career, although ironically related to the scenario in a way, had nothing to do with him finding them. Also, the couple was found to have bags of sponges all over their house, why?

Guys, I don't think that the bodies would be well-preserved after being crushed.
I have a theory that those two people were definitely doing some exploring. And I have a theory that they were well-preserved in a setting much more cold, like ice. Perhaps they were finding evidence of something or another in a cave when there was a sudden cave-in, trapping them inside. Eventually, they died of starvation, but the cold environment kept them well-preserved. After a set of days when other archaeologists started to get worried, they sent a few more people to see what's up. There, they stumbled upon the cave-in and cleared the rock off the entrance.

The bodies being carefully preserved and the archaeologist being able to identify the bodies makes me want to think that the archaeologist has got to do something with the bodies. May be he is the one who buried them there.

He was buried under there with them originally. They are his fellow archeologists
