Well, it depends.

He could wait for the lions to starve to death, then enter.

Or he could walk over the door that drops into a pit, assuming it is on the ground.

The second room, which promises to 'hold back' poison gasses.

the room with the hungry lions because if they are hungry it means they are dead

I agree with jkj123, Bottomless pit - it would be Awesome, die of thirst after days of continuous falling. You would probably black out due to acceleration right? So unconsciously falling for a while, then your body falling for eternity.

considering he spelled sentence wrong he could have meant black poisonous gas which in that case id stay out of there the lions are hungry and waiting which means they are not dead falling until you die into a hole that would very quickly become pitch black is not an ideal way to die either

i would have to say yea if back is not a spelling mistake id would go into that room as it would be the safest.

I think the puzzle should read this way:
A murderer is condemned to death. He has to choose between three rooms.
The first is full of raging fires, the second is full of assassins with
loaded guns, and the third is full of lions that haven''t eaten in 3 years.
Which room is safest for him?

And the answer is the room with the lions because if they haven't eaten in 3 years they are, in fact, dead and would not be a threat.

The man was a lion tamer, so he entered the first room and tries to control the hungry lions.
