Maybe he's reading signs in a cave. Like hieroglyphs. I know this is an answer with a weak logic but this what came to my mind. :?

This is plato's allegory of the cave. He is seeing shadows from people and objects between him and the fire (the fire may be representative of the sun) and their shadows can telll a story
