Because his Mom had angrily told him to "sit still in the chair until I tell you to move, otherwise I'll break your neck", and then just forgot about the matter until 88 hours later.

The man was waiting for his piano tuner to finish. After tuning each string, the tuner would go on break for the rest of the hour. When the tuner finished the 88th string, his friends threw a loud party for him for the rest of the hour, because he had never before finished a whole piano.

Kudos to MRdave's responses.

I would like to also add that the man was contemplating bacon.
OR
He was kidnapped by the way, kidnapped. He was attached to the chair in more ways than one, fed with a straw and the chair was rigged with an accelerometer and an arduino set to start his house on fire if he moved.

In seriousness, we're all looking at this in terms of "a man sat still in a chair for a really long time." Perhaps the number 88 is a clue. Or maybe the word hour. I think 88 credit hours is about two years of college. Also, what kind of chair is it and might gender be important?

ValhallaStarfire 14 November 2013

For this, I will post a question and a guess.
Q: Is the man alive throughout the duration?
A: He died in the chair, and his body wasn't found until 88 hours later.

jayantkumarz48 11 January 2014

That one by MRDave is very acceptable. The hours need not be consecutive.
Secondly, (hrs.) may be some sort of currency or similar?
