The cops know it's John because he is the only man in the room, while the carpenter, mechanic, and truck driver are all women.

I've seen this one before and it was messed up.
John is a fireMAN, not a firefighter.
A fireman can't be a woman, otherwise it would be a firewoman.
A firefighter is genderless.
