Why is there a hole in a donut?

Submitted by tartle · Added 17 January 2013 · Updated 2 July 2026

Solution:

The hole in a donut allows for even cooking and frying, ensuring that the dough is cooked thoroughly throughout. While there are donuts without holes, the hole in traditional donuts facilitates coating and enhances their visual appeal.

If there was no hole in the middle of a donut, then the bread in the middle portion will not get "baked/cooked" well.

Acutally, there are donuts without holes. But they can't coat them unless they can put them on a stick or pole.
So usually, the donuts with holes in them are either covered in chocolate, caramel or coated with syrup.
