41. Sixty-Six Letters

The following string of 11 letters follows a particular pattern:

G E L N D J J R S S K

There should ultimately be 66 letters produced by the same rule.

What is the pattern, and what would the complete 66-letter string be?

Hint:

Think of a well-known collection that happens to contain exactly 66 parts.

Solution:

The 66 letters are the initials of the 66 books of the Bible, listed in canonical order. The first eleven letters shown correspond to:

  • G – Genesis
  • E – Exodus
  • L – Leviticus
  • N – Numbers
  • D – Deuteronomy
  • J – Joshua
  • J – Judges
  • R – Ruth
  • S – 1 Samuel
  • S – 2 Samuel
  • K – 1 Kings

Continuing this process for every book gives the full 66-letter sequence:

GELNDJJRSSKKCCENEIJPTPJESIJLPECCGEPCTTTTHPPCCCTPPHHJJJRR

These are, in order, the initial letters of all the books from Genesis to Revelation.
