13. The Bakery Change Conundrum

Person X has a bakery. Person Y comes to buy a cake for Rs 600 and gives a Rs 1000 note to X. However, X does not have change for the Rs 1000 note, so he goes to Z to get change. X returns, gives the cake and Rs 400 change to Y. Y then goes home with the cake. Later, Z informs X that the Rs 1000 note he received is counterfeit. Z asks X to replace the note. The question is, how much loss does X have?

Hint:

Consider both the value of the cake and the change given to Y when calculating the loss.

Solution:

X's total loss is Rs 1000. He lost the cake worth Rs 600 and Rs 400 in change, totaling Rs 1000.
