15. Bankrupt Calling System Mystery

A phone company introduced a low-cost calling system for the first time. It operates by coins and becomes very popular among people in that country, but the company goes bankrupt in one year. Why is that?

Added 20 January 2011

Solution:

The new pay-phones checked only the size and weight of the inserted “low-cost” coin. People discovered that a common metal washer matched the coin perfectly, so calls could be made for free. The service became hugely popular, but because almost no real money was being deposited the company’s income collapsed and it went bankrupt within a year.
