Hint:

Think about how you can use the containers to transfer oil between them to achieve the desired measurement.

Solution:

1. Fill the 5-litre container from the 8-litre container.

2. Pour oil from the 5-litre container into the 3-litre container until the 3-litre container is full. This leaves you with 2 litres in the 5-litre container.

3. Empty the 3-litre container.

4. Pour the remaining 2 litres from the 5-litre container into the 3-litre container.

5. Fill the 5-litre container again from the 8-litre container.

6. Pour from the 5-litre container into the 3-litre container until the 3-litre container is full. Since it already has 2 litres, you can only add 1 more litre.

7. This leaves you with exactly 4 litres in the 5-litre container.
