117. Find the Next Number in the Sequence

Find the next number in the series:

18, 10, 6, 4, ?

Added 4 September 2009

Hint:

Look at the differences between consecutive terms. What happens to those differences each step?

Solution:

The successive differences are:
10 − 18 = −8
6 − 10 = −4
4 − 6 = −2

Each difference is exactly half of the previous one (−8, −4, −2, …). Halving −2 gives −1, so the next term is:

4 + (−1) = 3

Answer: 3
