80. Dead Wife, New Stranger A husband is speeding through the city streets with his pregnant wife in the passenger seat. They screech to a halt outside a building, and the man jumps out of the car. Only a few minutes later he returns to find his wife dead—and a complete stranger now sitting in the car with her. Nothing supernatural has happened, and no crime has been committed by the stranger. What took place during those few minutes? Added 27 December 2010 Show Hint Show Solution Hint: Think about why the couple might be rushing, and how a person the husband has never met could legitimately appear in the car. Solution: The wife had gone into labor while they were racing to the hospital. When they arrived, the husband ran inside to summon medical staff. In the brief time he was gone, she delivered the baby by herself in the car but suffered fatal complications. When the husband returned, his wife had died, and their newborn child—someone he had never met before, hence a “stranger” to him—was in her arms.
