108. The Two Guards

At the entrance to a building, two guards are standing outside. One guard is facing north, and the other guard is facing south.
The guard facing north smiles. The other guard sees him and asks, “Why are you smiling?”
How could the second guard see him?

Solution:

The two guards are facing each other, with one guard facing north and the other facing south. The guard facing north smiles because he is looking at the other guard, while the guard facing south is looking directly at him.

The scenario with the two guards is intriguing. Can you clarify why the guard facing north smiles?

Just because one is facing north and one is facing south doesn't mean that they are back-to-back. For example, we can use the letters p and d to represent the people. (The line sticking out is the direction they are facing.)

The way you're supposed to interpret this is that they look like this:
d
p

But in actuality, they can be like this:
p
d

That way, they are looking right at each other, but the p is facing south and the d north.
