82. Two Numbers That Add Up to 21

I am thinking of two positive integers that add up to 21. One number is 3 greater than the other. What are the two numbers?

Hint:

Set up two equations: let the smaller number be x. Then the larger is x + 3 and their sum is 21.

Solution:

Let the smaller number be x. Then the larger is x + 3.

x + (x + 3) = 21 → 2x + 3 = 21 → 2x = 18 → x = 9.

So the numbers are 9 and 12.
